Tritons Run to the Pub!

An absolutely beautiful spring day greeted a dozen Tritons, and another twelve hundred or so runners, at the annual Run to the Pub yesterday. It was great to see everyone out there on the course — at the start line, the finish chute and Pub 317 for a couple of pints of Guinness. Sadly, and previously our exclusive domain, with JayZ winning it the first year and yours truly in 2010, the Tritons did not 3-peat on the Trip to the Dublin Marathon this year. We’ll just have to bring home the trip in 2012. And, how about former Triton Coach Aubrey Curtis winning the overall 10K  in a blistering pace of 5:49? Nice racing everyone. Nothing like getting the race season rolling, the heart pumping, especially with the Montana Masters Swimming Championships and the Grizzly Triathlon on the horizon.  See you out there again soon. ERIN GO BRAGH!

2011 USA Triathlon Pacific Northwest Region Championships

Here’s the line up of 2011 USA Triathlon Pacific Northwest Region Championships and Special Qualifiers. The three Regional Championship and Special Qualifier races occurring prior to August 12, 2011 qualify the top 33% per age group for the 2011 USA Triathlon Age Group Nationals in Burlington, Vermont on August 20. 2011.

At its January social, the Bozeman Triathlon Club selected the Coeur d’Alene Triathlon (along with the Grizzly and Spring Meadow Triathlons) as a Triton Team Racing event. If you’re planning your races for this year, hopefully you’ll sign up for the Coeur d’Alene Triathlon.

We’re not certain of the rules yet, but the 2011 Region Club Championship may be at stake at the CDA Triathlon, too. The venue makes for a fun group event!

Grizzly Triathlon Update

Below are a handful of fun Grizzly Triathlon factoids, courtesy Race Directors Giles Thelen and Elliot Basset. The race sold out in 20 minutes this year. Waiting list slots are available, and  racers are often accommodated. Get on the waiting list at RACE ON.

1) The Grizzly Triathlon is the biggest pool-swim triathlon in America, and the second biggest in North America with 420 race slots comprising about 460 racers. (There is a 500 racer triathlon in Vancouver, BC.)

2) This year the race filled in 20 minutes. The 2010 race filled in 2 hours, the 2009 race filled in 8 hours, the 2008 race filled in three days, and the 2007 race filled in about 1 week. If the trend holds, next year the race will fill in less than 5 minutes!

3) 54% of the racers are women.

4) 23% of the racers will be competing in their 1st Triathlon EVER!

5) Ages range from 10 (relay) to 76. 15 are over 60, and 22 are 18 or under. 34 are UM students

6) Eight states (Washington, Idaho, Colorado, Maryland, Nevada New York and Wisconsin) are represented, while 93% of the racers are from Montana.

7) Cities from Montana with over 10 entries are Missoula (49%), Bozeman (8%), Billings (6%) and Helena (3%). There are 24 other Montana cities represented in the 2011 race.

Missoula, Montana – April 10, 2010
Four Tritons Land on the Grizzly Triathlon Age Group Podium!
The Tritons recorded a couple of firsts this year at 22nd annual Grizzly Triathlon. The Club had its largest number of racers ever at the season opener—FIFTEEN– and its largest number of podium finishers ever, with FOUR. Either we’re growing or getting faster, and both are good. Julie Zickovich, Laurie Thatcher & Art Thompson landed silver medals, and Greg Benjamin earned a bronze. Occasionally referred to as the Montana World Championships by local Missoulians, the Grizzly Triathlon is by far the largest multi-sport race in Montana. Four hundred and six individual triathletes and seventeen teams participated yesterday. Age group sizes again ran deep, with most hovering around 20 racers per bracket. Sunny weather offered fast race conditions. Detailed race results follow. Congrats to all, and TRAIN ON.
